Fans of Uggie, the dog star of "The Artist," are keeping their paws and fingers crossed that Uggie's name will be read when nominees for the 84th annual Academy Awards are revealed Tuesday.
Of course "The Artist," "The Descendants" and "Hugo" are big nominees. No surprise. But "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close"? No one saw that coming. The Oscar nominations are a mix of nods and double takes.
Steven Spielberg's rollicking adventure won both the Golden Globe and Producers Guild Award for animated feature. But all it got from Oscar was a musical score nomination. The academy clearly isn't ready for motion capture performance, whether you call it animation, as in "Tintin," or live-action, as in visual effects nominee "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," which really starred Caesar the chimp, aka actor Andy Serkis.
Which nominee will win best picture? Which have no chance? Our predictions.
The 84th annual Academy Award nominations for supporting actress in a motion picture have been announced in Beverly Hills, Calif., by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
What?!? "Drive" was nominated for only sound editing? "Tintin" and "Cars 2" were ignored for animated feature? And can't "Harry Potter" get more Oscar love?
Oscars season is now in full swing, as the Academy Award nominations were announced this morning. Here are the 25 movies you should see before Oscar night on Feb. 26. Get your popcorn ready!
If the simple act of eating can make movie stars seem a bit more like real people, it's no wonder so many directors have their casts munching their way across the silver screen. This year food is frequently used in pivotal scenes to move the plot along or to flesh out a character's personality.
There are only nominees in the best song category of the Academy Awards: Sergio Mendes' "Real in Rio" from "Rio" and Bret McKenzie's "Man or Muppet" from "The Muppets." Somehow songs by Elton John, Lady Gaga, Mary J. Blige, Elvis Costello, Willie Nelson, Brad Paisley and other stars didn't make the cut.
The Directors Guild of America Awards are the latest Hollywood film honors to go silent. Now "Artist" director Michel Hazanavicius has the inside track for the best-director prize at the Academy Awards.
In a potential preview of next month's Oscars, the Deep South drama "The Help" won three prizes Sunday at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, including best actress for Viola Davis and supporting actress for Octavia Spencer. "The Help" also claimed the guild's ensemble award, the show's equivalent of a best-picture prize.
Madonna is returning to the public eye: "W.E.," which she directed, arrives in New York and L.A. on Friday. She'll perform at the Super Bowl on Sunday. And her album "MDNA" is due in March.
Now that the major Hollywood guilds have doled out their awards, it's time to get serious with your Oscar pools. Here are some betting tips:
For the sixth year in a row, AMC Theatres will let you cram in all the big Academy Award nominees in a big Best Picture Showcase. You have two wonderfully butt-numbing options:
It's hard to watch this year's batch of Oscar nominees without presuming that filmmakers would rather be anywhere but now. They'd rather be anywhere else -- assuming that a little movie history is involved. But let's call it the New Nostalgia.
With Uggie stealing hearts in "The Artist," snagging the spotlight at celebrity events and reportedly preparing for a sketch with Oscar host Billy Crystal, Hollywood really has gone to the dogs this year. There's even a brand-new awards show honoring canine performers.
The owner of Hollywood's Kodak Theatre is challenging bankrupt Eastman Kodak Co.'s effort to end its sponsorship agreement and have the company's name removed from the Academy Awards venue.
Silent movie "The Artist" had a night to shout about Sunday, winning seven prizes including best picture at the British Academy Film Awards.
Winners of the 2012 British Academy Film Awards, presented Sunday:
ORLANDO, Fla. - The honors and accolades have piled up around the little French silent film "The Artist" all through this awards' season - Critic's Choice Awards, Golden Globes, and a Director's Guild of America honor for director writer-director Michel Hazanavicius.
This year, the academy nominated a mere pair of tunes in the original song category. Some years the academy gets the best-song award right. Other years, not so much.
Oprah Winfrey is the latest celebrity to join Jimmy Kimmel's seventh post-Oscar special.
LOS ANGELES - Two legendary actors - Christopher Plummer and Max von Sydow - are competing for the supporting actor trophy this Oscar season. Despite their pedigree - Plummer has been acting in films for more than 50 years and is best known as Captain von Trapp in 1965's "The Sound of Music," and Von Sydow is closely associated with the seminal Swedish director Ingmar Bergman - neither has won an Academy Award.
Aerialists, acrobats and contortionists from Cirque du Soleil are among the guests at this year's Academy Awards.
"The Help" collected three prizes at the NAACP Image Awards, including top actress honors for Viola Davis, the supporting actress prize for Octavia Spencer and outstanding motion picture.
LOS ANGELES - When the names of winners are revealed on Oscar night, months of suspense give way to tears, smiles and speeches. Yet when the curtain falls, one question remains: Who cast the votes?
This year's box office is booming, except, gulp, for Oscar movies. The 2012 grosses have been surprisingly strong, up nearly 18 percent year to date compared with 2011. But if you think any of that is thanks to people rushing out to see the best picture contenders ahead of Sunday's Academy Awards show, think again.
Quick, name the 10 most memorable Oscar acceptances speeches ever given, not including Sally Field's iconic "You like me" speech.
Cementing their position as front-runners for screenwriting Oscars, the three writers of "The Descendants" and Woody Allen for "Midnight in Paris" took the adapted and original screenplay awards, respectively, Sunday night from the Writers Guild of America.
PHILADELPHIA - Picture this, why doncha: A betuxed Bradley Cooper rolling up to the red carpet at the Kodak Theatre on Oscar night, stepping off his bicycle, and heading in to present some awards. How about Academy Award nominees Jonah Hill, Rooney Mara, Michelle Williams, Brad Pitt and/or Bret McKenzie (best song: "Man or Muppet") likewise pedaling their way through Hollywood's blocked streets and limo jams Sunday evening, Feb. 26?
Detroit has some nominees to root for during the Oscars, including the adapted screenplay for a movie that spent weeks filming here, "The Ides of March," and a documentary, "If A Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front," with an executive producer, Stephen Bannatyne, who hails from nearby Port Huron.
"84th Annual Academy Awards" 8:30 p.m. EST, Feb. 26, ABC
Anyone who knows their Oscars knows that nominees' fashion plans are strictly top secret until the big day. They seem to be more revealing about their designer undergarments, though.
The Academy Awards will be coming to you live from the same place - but with a different name.
At least one person on the Oscars red carpet won't have to worry about what to wear: Mother Dolores Hart.
It's only the 84th year of the Academy Awards, yet the nostalgia factor feels as though Hollywood is celebrating a centennial of some sort.
Demian Bichir learned an important lesson when he left his native Mexico to launch a U.S. acting career and ended up working in a Mexican restaurant in New York: How to live the invisible life of an illegal immigrant with dignity.
All four acting winners from last year's Academy Awards are returning to this weekend's Oscars as presenters.
We asked readers to tell us who should win the major Academy Awards, plus a few alternative honors as well. Find all the results here. You can also print out your own 2012 Oscar ballot.
Are the Oscars over yet? We're jumping ahead to some of the nominees' upcoming projects that are making us giddy with excitement.
